Musuh

Apa arti dari kata “musuh” bagi anda? Orang yang menyebalkan, hina dina, patut dilempar bangku dan dibuang ke neraka?

Kali ini bebek mengajak anda-anda sekalian untuk berpikir ulang atas posisi seorang musuh di kehidupan kita.

Sila renungkan beberapa potong kisah berikut ini:

Beberapa hari yang lalu, bebek membaca komik Sherman’s Lagoon yang berjudul: “Poodle: the other white meat”. 

Dari kiri->kanan: Hawthorne si hermit crab (keong?) yang mempunyai hobi mencapit jempol kaki manusia dan menjalankan bisnis secara tidak jujur, Sherman si hiu putih gendut  yang agak-agak tulul (Hawthorne pernah mengejeknya sebagai “The Great WIDE Shark”) dan Fillmore si penyu laut (sea turtle) yang berjiwa kutu buku. 

Salah satu cerita tersebut bermula dengan adegan Sherman dan Fillmore yang duduk berselahan. Tanpa Fillmore sadari, seekor sucker fish (ikan penyedot??) menempel di bagian belakang kepalanya. Sherman terlihat ragu untuk memberitahu Fillmore tentang keberadaan sucker fish tersebut.

Dialog dalam komik kemudian berlangsung sebagai berikut:

Fillmore: Do you know the problem is with friends, Sherman?

Sherman: No. What?

Fillmore: Sometimes they don’t tell you what you really ought to know. You could go your whole life with some glaring fault and remain totally clueless about it. Friends aren’t going to tell you… They don’t want to hurt your feeling. And complete stragers coundn’t care less. What everyone nees is a good enemy. That’s what enemies are for.

Lalu tiba-tiba muncullah si Hawthorne yang sering tegaan untuk ngata-ngatain makhluk lain.

Hawthorne: You’ve got bad breath and a big sucker fish on your head!

Fillmore: Thank you.

Untuk lebih melengkapi kisah di atas, izinkanlah bebek mengutip perkataan dari Antithenes, seorang filsuf dari Athena yang juga merupakan murid dari Socrates:

“There are only two people who can tell you the truth about yourself – an enemy who has lost his temper and a friend who loves you dearly.”

Kutipan dialog dari film “Conspiracy” yang diproduksi oleh HBO:

Yes, he told me a story about a man he’d known all his life, a boyhood friend.

This man hated his father. Loved his mother fiercely. The mother was devoted to him but the father beat him, demeaned him, disinherited him.

Anyway, this boy grew to manhood and was still in his 30s when the mother died… this mother who had nurtured and protected him. She died. The man stood as they lowered her casket and tried to cry but no tears came.

The man’s father lived to old age, died when the son was in his 50s. At the father’s funeral, much to his son’s surprise, he could not control his tears. He was wailing, sobbing. He was apparently inconsolable. Lost, even. That was the story Kritzinger told me.

Bingung kenapa laki-laki itu justru bersedih atas kematian ayahnya? Dialog selanjutnya mungkin dapat menjelaskan…

The man had been driven his whole life by hatred of his father. When the mother died, that was a loss. When the father died… when the hate had lost its object… then the man’s life was empty. Over.

Dan untuk melengkapi kisah yang satu ini, bebek mengutip perkataan dari Friedrich Nietzsche:

“He who lives by fighting with an enemy has an interest in the preservation of the enemy’s life.”
